Samsung, reigning smart phone champ, preps Galaxy S III
The Galaxy S III is set to debut in the US in June. What will it mean for Samsung??
Yesterday, Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy S III, a svelte new smartphone equipped with a?4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, a?1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, and a June launch date. ?
Skip to next paragraphIn a hands-on preview posted at Engadget, Mat Smith faulted Samsung for not upping the design quotient ? the Galaxy S III looks not so different from other Samsung phones ? but praised the display and predicted that the snappy processor which should help the Galaxy S III "spar for top spot among Android devices." So hey, what will the Galaxy S III mean for Samsung??
Well, here's where things get interesting. According to a recent report from IDC, Samsung currently owns the biggest slice of the global smartphone market, besting even Apple, its closest competitor. In the first quarter of 2012, Samsung sold a whopping?42.2 million smartphones, compared to the 35.1 million sold by Apple. (As one reporter has pointed out, "every second smartphone sold across the world [now comes] from either Samsung or Apple.")?
But that doesn't mean that Samsung is necessarily earning more than Apple. Over at CNET,?Asymco analyst Horace Dediu tells Lance Whitney that worldwide smartphone operating profits are split between only two major players: Apple, with 73 percent, and Samsung, with 26 percent. HTC, in third place, gets 1 percent of the pie. That means that everyone else is either losing money or fighting over a rounding error.?
The reason Apple makes so much money off the iPhone? Carrier subsidies,?Dediu?says. The iPhone helps carriers stay "competitive," CNET reports, and the carriers are willing to pay a premium for that privilege.?
"Following this value proposition to its logical conclusion would suggest that the industry is rewarding those who can supply computers-as-phones which preserve the cash flows of what is essentially a trillion dollar data services business," Dediu says. "Vendors which cannot offer this solution saw their businesses implode. At least on the high end."
And herein, we return again to the Galaxy S III, which has already inspired an iPhone-worthy puddle of drool. If Samsung can succeed in making its new device a "must-have," as the Apple smartphone is now, it could also start to rack up the kind of carrier subsidies currently enjoyed by Team Cupertino. It's a long shot, of course, but if there's one Samsung phone that could do it, it's the Galaxy S III.?

Ron Paul Wins Maine Caucuses at Party Convention
Ron Paul supporters took control of the Maine Republican Convention and elected a majority slate supporting him to the GOP national convention.
The results gave the Texas congressman a late state victory.
In votes leading to the close of the two-day Maine GOP convention, Paul supporters were elected to 21 of 24 delegate spots from the state to the Republican national convention in Tampa, Fla., giving him a demonstrative win in the state.
Paul, the last challenger to Mitt Romney to remain in the contest, finished a close second behind Romney in Maine's GOP caucuses in February.
Those results were nonbinding, however, and not everyone had a chance to cast a ballot before the results were announced, as a snowstorm forced the cancellation of some caucuses, including one in a Paul stronghold.
Romney won the February election with 39 percent of the vote to Paul's 36 percent. Rick Santorum's 18 percent and Newt Gingrich's 6 percent.
Nevertheless, the caucuses merely selected the delegates to the state's party convention, and at that event, 21 of 24 voted to nominate Paul.
Romney's aides say they don't view Paul as a threat to winning the nomination, but are mindful not to do or say anything to anger his supporters.
"I think he's being very careful because he knows how important the Ron Paul voters are - they obviously represent a very different dynamic," said Mike Dennehy, a former top aide to Republican John McCain's 2008 campaign.
"They are the most passionate and the most frustrated of any voters heading to the polls. And many of them are actually independents."
In any case, the weekend's turn of events would indicate the GOP has not yet united behind the man many call the presumptive nominee, and there are indications the infighting may last through the national convention this summer.
If nothing else, it's a testament to the staying power of the movement started by Paul and his supporters, who are peerless in their devotion.

Build your own CyanogenMod with the latest CMC beta for Ubuntu
Back in December we first had a look at CMC (CyanogenMod Compiler), and it's come a long way since. What started as a command line tool to help download, sync, and build CyanogenMod for any supported device has turned into a full-featured program, complete with a GUI and plenty of polish. With CMC you'll be able to sync with your preferred branch (Gingerbread or ICS) for any officially supported device, then build a flashable zip file with just a few button clicks.
A few warnings are needed here. Firstly, what you're left with when finished is a completely unsupported (by the CM team) nightly build -- don't file bug reports or expect much assistance if there are issues. Next, there's the fact that you're spending time (as in a lot of time) downloading a couple Gigabytes of code and then building it yourself versus just downloading a 100MB file. Finally, we can't forget that fiddling with custom firmware is a great way to ruin your expensive Android device, and only you are responsible for what you do.
If you understand, and are OK with those minor details, this is a great way to roll-your-own CM without much experience. It's a great introduction to software compilation, and the pride of building your own installation is something special. You'll need to be running Ubuntu (versions 10.04 through 12.04 are supported), and the .Deb files will setup and install any dependencies. Give it a look, and be sure to thank lithid-cm for this cool tool!
