Video immaturity: Nate Diaz not a fan of cowboy hats or Donald Cerrone

Aside from watching 500-plus pounds of muscle hit the stage at the UFC 141 weigh-in today, the staredown between Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone should be epic, if not a bit violent.

Yesterday's staredown at the final press conference resulted in Donald Cerrone's cowboy hat flying 10 feet in the air. Check out the video (NSFW) to see the aftermath with 20-somethings, Nate and his brother Nick, talk about who's really the puss in this case.

For Cerrone, he loves being the bully and thinks he's in Diaz's head.

"He is the guy that punks everybody else and gets in everyone else's head, so now what happened? The tables turned, and now I'm in your head, you little (expletive)," Cerrone told Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "It feels good to turn the tables, to think that he came out hard and wanted to be a bully and now I'm bullying him."

Cerrone wasn't totally calm about Thursday's minor fracas. That was $1,000 cowboy hat that Diaz was messing with.

This is shaping up as a very solid card with the Cerrone-Diaz beef leading into a good main event between behemoths Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

For Iran, cost of closing strait may outweigh gain (AP)

CAIRO ? With missile batteries, fleets of attack boats and stocks of naval mines, Iran can disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz but probably cannot completely shut down the world's most important oil route, military analysts say. The question for Iran's leadership is whether it is worth the heavy price.

Trying to close the strait would bring down a powerful military response on Iran's head from U.S. forces in the Gulf and turn Tehran's few remaining international allies against it.

That Iran is making such dire threats at all illustrates its alarm over new sanctions planned by the U.S. that will target oil exports ? the most vital source of revenue for its economy. Iran's leaders shrugged off years of past sanctions by the U.S. and United Nations, mocking them as ineffective. But if it cannot sell its oil, its already-suffering economy will be sent into a tailspin.

"It would be very, very difficult for Iran even to impede traffic for a significant period of time," said Jonathan Rue, a senior research analyst at the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War. "They don't have the ability to effectively block the strait."

What the Iranians can do, Rue and other analysts say, is harass traffic through the Gulf ? anything from stopping tankers to outright attacks. The goal would be to panic markets, drive up shipping insurance rates and spark a rise in world oil prices enough to pressure the United States to back down on sanctions.

The strait would seem to be an easy target, a bottleneck only about 30 miles (50 kilometers) across at its narrowest point between Iran and Oman.

Tankers carrying one-sixth of the world's oil supply pass through it, from the fields of petrogiants Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbors, exiting the Persian Gulf into the Arabian Sea and on to market. They move through two two-mile-wide shipping lanes, one entering the Gulf, one exiting.

In recent years, Iran has dramatically ramped up its navy, increasing its arsenal of fast-attack ships, anti-ship missiles and mine-laying vessels. Its elite Revolutionary Guards boasts the most powerful naval forces, with approximately 20,000 men, with at least 10 missile patrol boats boasting C-802 missiles with a range of 70 miles (120 kilometers) and a large number of smaller patrol boats with rocket launchers and heavy machine guns, according to a recent report by Anthony Cordesman at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The navy has three submarines and an unknown number of midget subs, capable of firing "smart" torpedoes or laying mines. It also has a large scale capability for laying mines using both small craft and commercial boats, according to the report.

The Revolutionary Guard has also deployed a heavy array of anti-ship Seersucker missiles with a range of up to 60 miles (100 kilometers) along its coast overlooking the strait, on mobile platforms that make them harder to hit.

The Guard's naval forces and the regular navy "have been the most favored service. The Iranian air force and ground forces have not seen the same level of attention in domestic procurement and weapons systems," Rue said. "They realize their navies are the best options for inflicting casualties" on the U.S. or Arab Gulf nations.

Still, those forces would not likely be enough to outright seal the strait, given the presence of the U.S. 5th Fleet based in the Gulf nation of Bahrain. On Wednesday, Pentagon spokesman George Little warned that any "Interference with the transit or passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will not be tolerated."

Laying minefields in the Hormuz waters would in theory be the most effective action, forcing time-consuming clearing by U.S. forces and their allies before tankers could move through.

But particularly strong currents in the strait make such mining difficult. Moreover, the U.S. and its Gulf allies have extensive surveillance in the area, meaning the Iranians would have little time to set an effective minefield, Rue said. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have both extensively increased their anti-mining capabilities.

Iran's anti-ship missile batteries on the coast are another major threat. But while the missile platforms are mobile, the radar facilities that enable them to target shipping largely are not, making them vulnerable to U.S. strikes.

"It wouldn't be a cakewalk" for U.S. and other forces to push back an Iranian attempt to close the strait, Rue said. But in the end, "their capabilities are not great and ours overwhelmingly outmatch theirs."

The closest parallel may be the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, when each side attacked shipping in the Gulf, trying to cut off the other's vital oil revenues. More than 500 ships were damaged in attacks, and Iranian mining and assaults prompted a U.S. operation escorting Kuwaiti tankers. But while oil shipments from the Gulf slowed, they came nowhere close to stopping.

Alireza Nader, an analyst at the RAND Corp., said Iran could start with lower-level moves short of outright attacks.

"It could harass shipping, stopping and searching ships. We could see those kind of provocative steps," he said.

But turning to military moves raises the danger for Iran of retaliation. And trying to close the strait could be disastrous for Tehran.

"If the benefits are higher than the costs, it could take that action, but it's difficult to see how that could be because of how bad the fallout would be," Nader said. "It's economic self-sabotage."

Hormuz is in the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, but it is considered an international strait where free passage is guaranteed, meaning that under international law, closing it by any nation would be considered an act of war. Russia and China, Iran's main allies that have protected it from stronger U.N. sanctions, would have little choice but to respond. Russia, which now has oil production contracts in Iraq, and China, which relies on the region for its supplies, also have no interest in seeing traffic stop, said Olivier Jakob of the Switzerland-based oil monitor Petromatrix.

Hormuz's closure would also be a heavier blow to Iran than any sanctions hitting the approximately 2.5 billion barrels a day of oil it exports, which provide some 80 percent of its revenue. Not only do all of its oil exports go through the strait, but also most of its imports, including vital gasoline supplies.

"A full shutdown would really be the worse case for Iran. That's their last bullet," Jakob said.

Given that, U.S. officials have expressed doubts Iran would carry out the threat. State Department spokesman Mark Toner called Iran's warnings merely "more rhetoric."

Iran has threatened to close the strait in the past, but in response to a U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. Now it has stepped it up a notch as a possible retaliation to sanctions, reflecting the degree of worry over the planned U.S. sanctions aimed at stopping its nuclear program,

The sanctions would ban transactions with the Iranian Central Bank. Countries and companies around the world use the bank to finance purchases of Iranian oil, meaning they would either have to stop buying it or face action from Washington.

Halting ? or even denting ? oil income would be devastating to an economy that is already struggling amid its international isolation. The value of Iran's riyal is now 15,200 to the dollar, from 10,500 a year ago. Cash withdrawals from banks have been restricted.

Prices of food and grocery items like milk have increased up to 20 percent in recent months. In an attempt to cut its budget, the government recently ended subsidies on fuel and some foods, sending gas prices up sevenfold and quadrupling bread prices. In place of subsidies, the government gives direct payments of $40 a month to poor families to pay for necessities.

The threats also reflect a worry among Iran's leaders that its oil can be replaced on the market by Arab producers, particularly Saudi Arabia, without too great an increase in world prices, said Mustafa Alani, a Geneva-based analyst with the Gulf Research Center. That makes a cutoff a viable option for the U.S., and if that happens "the economy will collapse."

"All the noise about Hormuz is linked to the feeling that it is possible, and they say, 'if we go down, we will take everyone with us.' If Iranian oil stops, then all the oil stops," he said.

But in the end, "I don't think they are willing to do it because the consequences would cost them too much," Alani said. "I don't think they are so stupid."

New Hampshire ?Scientists? Urge GOP Contenders To Embrace Climate Change Hoax

The Warmists just won?t give up their cultish beliefs, and The Hill is there to run with the story without any fact checking

Fifty New Hampshire scientists Thursday called on the Republican presidential candidates to accept the ?overwhelming? scientific evidence behind climate change.

The scientists issued the joint statement just weeks before the Jan. 10 New Hampshire primary, a key early test for the GOP White House hopefuls.

?We urge all candidates for public office at national, state, and local levels, and all New Hampshire citizens, to acknowledge the overwhelming balance of evidence for the underlying causes of climate change, to support appropriate responses to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases, and to develop local and statewide strategies to adapt to near-term changes in climate,? the scientists said.

?Ignoring the issue of climate change places our health, our quality of life, our economic vitality, and our children?s future at risk.?

Funny how these ?scientists? are worried about our children?s future, considering that the majority of the Believers are left of center and back the huge spending of Big Government, which will destroy the future of our kids through unsustainable debt, deficits, and unpaid liabilities. Also, if they were being precise, they would at least call it global warming, instead of the catch all ?climate change?, which allows the Warmists to embrace everything that happens under the banner of someone (else) having driven a car.

And then there is this, as explained by Drew Cline at the Union Leader

It is a funny little bit of propaganda made all the more humorous by its labeling as ?scientists? a historian, a sociologist, two political scientists, a professor of health economics, several civil engineers, two medical doctors, and some Ph.D. candidates.

Nothing says ?We are serious scientists; heed our doomsday predictions!? quite like the overstating of credentials. If they?ll overstate their credentials, then why wouldn?t they overstate the connection between recent weather events and human behavior?

Nonetheless, the petition got written up in The Hill, which lent it some undue legitimacy. Voters ought to ignore it.

Hence the reason I put scientists in quotes. But, then, the majority of people that bloviate about the need to Do Something about anthropogenic global warming aren?t climate scientists. Al Gore isn?t. Nor is James Hansen. Nor most of the people who work on the UN IPCC panel and write their press releases and documents. Nor most that attend the yearly UN climate change (hoax) conferences in exotic vacation spots, as well as all the other conferences.

But, anyhow, if we are supposed to listen to these 50 ?scientists? on the issue, why are we supposed to ignore the 31,000 who signed the petition against AGW?

Samsung Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 10.1 appear poised for US Cellular

USCC inventory

It's long been rumored that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 would be headed to US Cellular. And now, thanks to USCC's ESN system, it looks like the Galaxy S II is headed that way as well. Neither device has been officially announced by the regional carrier. But given the depth of its current roster of Android smartphones and tablets, it's probably just a matter of time.

Thanks, anon!

Women with celiac disease suffer from depression, disordered eating

Women with celiac disease -- an autoimmune disorder associated with a negative reaction to eating gluten -- are more likely than the general population to report symptoms of depression and disordered eating, even when they adhere to a gluten-free diet, according to researchers at Penn State, Syracuse University and Drexel University.

People with celiac disease often suffer from abdominal pain, constipation, decreased appetite, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The disease affects somewhere between one in 105 to one in 1,750 people in the United States and is typically controlled by avoiding gluten-containing foods such as wheat, barley and rye.

"It is easy to see how people who are not managing their disease well can frequently feel unwell and, therefore, be more stressed and have higher rates of depression," said Josh Smyth, professor of biobehavioral health and medicine, Penn State, "But researchers had not carefully looked at whether people who are effectively managing celiac disease exhibit a greater risk for such difficulties."

Smyth and his colleagues used a web-mediated survey to assess a range of physical, behavioral and emotional experiences in 177 American women over the age of 18 who reported a physician-provided diagnosis of celiac disease. The survey questions explored respondents' levels of adherence to a gluten-free diet and assessed various symptoms of celiac disease, how physical symptoms interfere with functioning, the respondents' experience and management of stressful situations, symptoms of clinical depression, and frequency of thoughts and behaviors associated with eating and body image.

The results are posted online and will appear in a future issue of Chronic Illness.

"We found that most participants frequently adhered to a gluten-free diet, and this greater compliance with diet was related to increased vitality, lower stress, decreased depressive symptoms and greater overall emotional health," said Smyth. "However, even those people who were managing their illness very well reported higher rates of stress, depression and a range of issues clustered around body image, weight and shape when compared to the general population."

Smyth noted that he and his colleagues did not survey people without celiac disease; rather, they compared their results to those previously determined for the non-celiac population.

It is understandable to find that women with celiac disease tend to suffer from disordered eating, given that the focus of celiac-disease management is to pay careful attention to what and how one eats, said Smyth.

"What we don't know is what leads to what and under what circumstances," he said. "It's likely that the disease, stress, weight, shape and eating issues, and depression are interconnected. But we don't know if women who are higher stressed and have celiac disease are more likely to develop symptoms of disordered eating and then become depressed, or if women with celiac disease are depressed and then become stressed, which leads to disordered eating. In the future, we plan to investigate the temporal sequence of these symptoms."

The team's results may have implications for people with food allergies and Crohn's disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease, as well as celiac disease, according to Smyth.

"Going out to eat with friends or to a holiday potluck is a much different experience for these people because they have to be vigilant and monitor their diets," he said. "They may feel that they are a burden on a host or hostess. In many cases the only treatment option they are given is to manage their diets. I think we need to educate patients at diagnosis or post-diagnosis about some of the other associated difficulties they might experience and provide strategies for how to better manage those things. I am a proponent of elaborating our treatment models to not just address diseases, but also to address the psychological, social and behavioral aspects of disease as well, as they can influence disease outcomes and the well being of patients."

Essex County gets $2 million for communications ? Local News ...

ELIZABETHTOWN ? Essex County's $9 million radio-system replacement just got a $2 million boost from a state grant.

The money is coming from a Statewide Interoperable Communication Grant created from 911 surcharge monies the state collects from cellular users.

Essex County Emergency Services Director Donald Jaquish said the funding will be used for microwave relay equipment in the new system.

He said it also ensures Essex County will get tower space for its dishes and antennas.

"I think we'll be a lot better off than if we had to do it alone. We didn't have places to put our microwave dishes unless they (other agencies) took theirs down."

Work is expected to begin in spring 2012.

THE BACKBONE

Other counties also got grants. Warren County will receive $736,398, while Washington County will get $171,500.

The money will be used for a five-county emergency-communications network that includes Franklin and Clinton counties, but those two didn't get grants in this round.

"The grant helps us, but it's interweaved with other counties," Jaquish said. "They got money to tie in to our system. We're the backbone."

He said the dishes will be part of an emergency-communications network in a redundant array that will allow emergency dispatching to continue even if one tower fails.

"Our microwave will link to their microwave," Jaquish said. "We'll link to other contiguous counties. It's part of our project."

FOR PUBLIC SAFETY

As part of a continuing project, Essex County is replacing most of its 1950s-era communications system with modern equipment, including new radios in every fire truck and ambulance in the county.

Essex County Board of Supervisors Chair Randy Douglas (D-Jay) said the grant will help them a lot.

"This is desperately needed in Essex County, as we continue to improve our communication devices for emergency situations. Our professional and volunteer emergency-service departments desperately need an improved radio system to provide public safety for our constituents."

State Office of Interoperable and Emergency Communications Director Robert M. Barbato said in a release that "the state intends to help counties improve the ability for first-responders to communicate with each other and create a network of regional partnerships to provide for interoperable communications statewide.?We believe that this award will help make progress towards that goal, and we look forward to working with them to achieve it."

A POSITIVE NOTE

The Essex County Department of Community Resources applied for the grant.

"We have a dedicated group of individuals working to ensure our first-responders have the critical infrastructure in place to perform during emergencies," Community Resources Director Michael Mascarenas said.

"With all of the issues we had this year, it was nice to end the year on a positive note."

Essex County has suffered through two floods in 2011, with road and bridge repairs from Tropical Storm Irene in August still not completed.

Jaquish said they're also getting help from public and private agencies in exchange for space on new radio towers.

Essex County will pick up 33? percent of the cost; New York State Police, another third; and New York State Electric and Gas, the remaining one-third.

Kim Jong-un 'supreme leader' of N. Korea military

North Korea hailed Kim Jong-il's son as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the nation's next leader even as the mourning for his father continued a week after his death.

Kim Jong-un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state, this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

The new title and public show of support from the military leadership sent a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong-il's "military first" policy for the time being.

Earlier Saturday, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, urged Kim Jong-un to accept the top military post: "Comrade Kim Jong-un, please assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people."

'Eternal president'

Kim Jong-un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. His father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on the grandson.

Kim Il-sung, who founded North Korea in 1948, retains the title of "eternal president" despite his death in 1994.

Son Kim Jong-il ruled as chairman of the National Defence Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People's Army and general secretary of the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong-un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of discussions with the U.S. on food aid and restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program. Chronically short of food and suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials had been asking for help feeding its people even as North Koreans prepared for 2012 celebrations marking Kim il-Sung's 100th birthday.

North Korea has emphasized the Kim family legacy during the sped-up succession movement for Kim Jong-un. State media invoked Kim il-Sung in declaring the people's support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il's ascension to "supreme commander" exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

Silent tribute

At the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Kim Jong-un and senior commanders paid silent tribute to Kim Jong-il, "praying for his immortality," KCNA said. The military also pledged its loyalty to Kim Jong-un, the report said.

"Let the whole army remain true to the leadership of Kim Jong-un over the army," KCNA reported ? a pledge reminiscent of those made when Kim Jong-il was named supreme commander.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong-un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, comes amid displays of grief across North Korea. The official mourning period lasts until after Kim's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

In Pyongyang, mourners waited in line Saturday to bow and lay flowers at Kim's portrait at plazas and government buildings, including the Pyongyang Circus Theater and the April 25 People's Army House of Culture, even as temperatures dropped to -14 C).

Workers at beverage kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colourful thick parkas. A sign urged mourners to thaw out inside a heated bus. The order to provide food and warming huts for mourners came from Kim Jong-un, officials said.

Solemn music

Earlier, a throng of North Koreans climbed steps and placed flowers and wreaths in a neat row below a portrait of Kim Jong-il as solemn music filled the air and young uniformed soldiers, their heads shaved, bowed before his picture.

A sobbing Jong Myong-Hui, a Pyongyang citizen taking a break from shovelling snow, told AP Television News that she came out voluntarily to "clear the way for Kim Jong-il's last journey."

For days, life in Pyongyang had come to a standstill, with shops and restaurants closed. Downtown Koryo Hotel, one of several in Pyongyang catering to foreigners, was nearly empty.

But there are signs that the country is beginning to move on.

"Streets, buses and the metro are all crowded with people going to their work. They are not giving way simply to sorrow," KCNA said. "They are getting over the demise of their leader, promoted by a strong will to closely rally around respected Comrade Kim Jong-un."

RIM now faces legal challenge on "BBM" trademark (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Research In Motion, still smarting over having to change the name of its yet-to-come operating system, faces a similar trademark challenge to its popular instant-messaging service BlackBerry Messenger.

The service, which allows BlackBerry users to send each other text and multimedia files and see when they are delivered and read, is widely known and even promoted by RIM via the shorthand BBM.

That has proven an encumbrance to BBM Canada, which measures radio and television audience data and expects its day in a Federal Court against RIM by February.

The company's chief executive, Jim MacLeod, said he wants RIM to stop advertising the BBM moniker but would also consider changing his much smaller company's name, for a price.

"We have to be practical, they operate worldwide, we don't. But we're not prepared to just walk from our name," MacLeod said.

RIM seems equally determined to keep using the BBM name and not to pay MacLeod's company anything.

"We believe that BBM Canada is attempting to obtain trademark protection for the BBM acronym that is well beyond the narrow range of the services it provides and well beyond the scope of rights afforded by Canadian trademark law," it said in an emailed statement.

RIM has launched its BBM Music song-sharing service in recent months, and heavily promoted third-party apps that tie into its instant messaging product, which boasts some 50 million active users.

BBM Canada was established in 1944 as the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement. It changed its name to BBM in the 1960s and to BBM Canada in the early 1990s, MacLeod said. The company, owned by a collection of broadcasters and advertisers, has annual revenue of around $50 million. RIM's sales were more than $5 billion last quarter.

"I'm sure to a really big company this looks like relatively small numbers, but to us it's a big deal," said MacLeod. BBM Canada employs around 650 people, compared with RIM's roughly 17,000.

Earlier this month RIM dumped the "BBX" name for its new operating system after being served with an injunction in a trademark fight with U.S.-based Basis International. RIM has renamed the platform as BlackBerry 10.

Industry Canada denied RIM's 2009 request to register the BBM trademark, saying the name was already in use, but has granted RIM until January 5 to respond.

BBM Canada launched its legal action late last year.

MacLeod said his company contacted RIM in July, soon after RIM launched a large-scale BBM advertising campaign. In response to BBM Canada's cease-and-desist letter RIM said there couldn't possibly be any confusion between the two names - a similar tactic was later used in the BBX spat.

RIM repeated that line of argument in Friday's statement.

"The services associated with RIM's BBM offering clearly do not overlap with BBM Canada's services and the two marks are therefore eligible to co-exist under Canadian trademark law. The two companies are in different industries and have never been competitors in any area."

MacLeod sought a meeting to discuss the issue with RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie several months ago, but said he has received no response.

McLeod pointed out that RIM had even taken legal action of its own against software startup Kik Interactive over its instant messaging service that includes claims of trademark infringement.

"It's a trademark they don't even own, it's ours," MacLeod said.

BALDWIN ABANDONS MAYOR BID

Actor ALEC BALDWIN has given up his plans to run for the post of New York Mayor in 2013 after losing his "appetite" for the role.
The actor revealed earlier this year (11) that he was considering swapping acting for politics and wanted to run in the 2013 election as a Democrat in a bid to succeed current mayor Michael Bloomberg.
But now Baldwin has decided against the idea, revealing on his weekly WNYC radio podcast, "I?ve lost my appetite." The actor is blaming other candidates for putting him off with their eagerness to land the position.
He adds, "They?re like a guy on a date that you can tell he just can?t wait to get his hand up your blouse before even the lights go out in the theatre. They?re all just so horny for it." Baldwin is also keen to keep his role on hit U.S. sitcom 30 Rock, because he no longer believes it would be worth quitting his career to attempt to make a change in society.
He adds, "Give this up (the show) for what? I give up money and fame and position and success; I give up this wonderful life I have now in exchange for the chance to ?really change things?? "Yeah, I?m not quite sure you can anymore. I?ve got a good job. Am I doing To Kill a Mockingbird? No. I?m doing a sitcom. But we have fun, and it?s a family."

Texas family rescued from snowdrift in New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Rescuers Wednesday pulled a Texas family from a car that had been buried in a snowdrift for nearly two days on a rural northeastern New Mexico highway.

State police say rescuers had to dig through four feet of ice and snow to free the Higgins family of Santa Fe, Texas, whose red Yukon got stuck on U.S. 56 near Springer when a blizzard moved through the area Monday.

Police say David and Yvonne Higgins and their 5-year-old daughter were clinging to each other and lethargic when they were found about 2:45 Wednesday morning.

The family is recovering at Miners Colfax Medical Center in Raton.

State police say they got a distress call and launched a search for the family Tuesday evening.

The Higgins were among 32 vehicles state police and guardsmen rescued from the storm, but they were the only ones who police say needed medical attention.

Mary-Kate Olsen Brings 'Homeless Chic' Look Back (PHOTOS)

Remember Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's signature "homeless chic" look?

It looks like the famous sisters haven't left their layered look behind. Mary-Kate stepped out in New York this weekend wearing ripped black jeans, black lace-up boots, an oversized red scarf, a gray wool coat and a black leather bag, probably by The Row (we're thinking it's a black version of the Doctor Bag).

MK's off-duty number reminds us of the old days, when the twins toted around their NYU homework in purses the size of duffle bags and Starbucks cups almost as big. The twins got flack for the look, as Style.com pointed out recently. MK + A explained:

Ashley: That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. Kind of a piece of protection.

Mary-Kate: For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you're going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow? ... I think it was probably that. And laziness.

Lazy? We don't believe it. That level of disheveled perfection is a look only an expert Olsen could achieve. Check out MK below.

Lowe's stores face protests for pulling ads from 'All American Muslim'

Lowe?s Home Improvement stores pulled its ads from the TV show 'All American Muslim' when the obscure?Florida Family Association objected to a positive portrayal of Muslims in the US. Protesters are expected to picket Lowe's stores around the country Saturday.

A nationwide protest Saturday against Lowe?s Home Improvement stores is standing the notion of advertiser boycotts on its head.

Such boycotts generally punish advertisers for supporting negative programming, but the protests in Dearborn, Mich., and from Maryland to San Diego, seek to protest the decision by Lowe?s to pull its ads from a TV show, ?All American Muslim,? whose message was essentially positive.

An inter-denominational group of Detroit-area faith leaders plans to picket Lowe?s Saturday in Dearborn, which has a large Arab-American population and is the location of the reality TV show. At a protest Friday in Paterson, New Jersey,?protesters held signs that said "Don't Appease Hate Mongers" and "Discrimination is Low, Lowe's.?

"Most of the time, people are asking buyers to boycott stores that advertise on shows with negative portrayals of something,? said Robert Thompson, founder of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University in New York. ?Here, they?re doing it for a positive portrayal.?

The Monitor's Weekly news Quiz 12/11-12/16

The reality show, which has appeared nationally on the TLC Network since its debut in mid-November, chronicles the daily lives of a group of Muslims in Dearborn. ?

But after pressure from the Florida Family Association (FFA), a Tampa, Florida-based organization that reportedly consists of its one founding member, David Caton, and is unaffiliated with any national organization, Lowe?s pulled its ads from the show. The FFA?s complaint? That the show exists primarily to normalize Americans? views of Muslims, who in the FFA?s view, are dangerous.

?The Learning Channel's new show, All-American Muslim is propaganda clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims who are advancing Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law,? says a statement at the FFA website.? ?The show profiles only Muslims that appear to be ordinary folks while excluding many Islamic believers whose agenda poses a clear and present danger to liberties and traditional values that the majority of Americans cherish.?

Several analysts say that although the FFA is appealing to base instincts of fear and hatred, the entire controversy has a brighter side.

Russia Protests Demand Rerun Of Elections

MOSCOW -- About 1,000 demonstrators demanding a rerun of parliamentary elections gathered Saturday in central Moscow for a second weekend of protests against Russia's fraud-tainted vote, a comparatively small crowd that underlined the challenge to the opposition of keeping up public pressure on authorities.

The turnout was far below the nationwide protests last Saturday in at least 60 cities, including a dramatic gathering of tens of thousands in Moscow, the largest show of public anger in post-Soviet Russia. Demonstrations took place in at least two other cities on Saturday.

The protests follow the Dec. 4 national parliamentary elections, in which the ruling United Russia party lost a significant share of its seats in the State Duma, though it retained a narrow majority. Opposition forces claim even that was unearned, supported by reports from local and international observers of widespread vote-count irregularities and outright fraud.

Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the Yabloko party that failed to make it into the parliament and staged Saturday's rally, said it had filed hundreds of appeals to protest the vote results. "We need a new election law and new, honest elections," he told the rally at Bolotnaya Square, on an island in the Moscow River a few hundred meters (yards) from the Kremlin.

The combination of fraud and United Russia's declining fortunes galvanized opposition groups that have been repressed under Putin's 12 years of rule. After several nights of unauthorized protests that police broke up harshly, Moscow authorities showed unprecedented largesse in granting permission to hold several large protests last weekend.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this week effectively rejected calls to rerun the election, declaring that its result reflected the people's will. The new Duma is to have its opening session on Wednesday.

President Dmitry Medvedev, who is stepping aside to allow Putin to run for a new term in the Kremlin, warned Saturday against attempts to "delegitimize" the government, saying it will mean the collapse of the state. Like Putin earlier this week, he promised to modernize Russia's political system, adding that the "old model has exhausted itself."

Medvedev on Friday had a phone call with President Barack Obama, who raised questions about the disputed election and welcomed his promise to investigate whether fraud had occurred, the White House said.

Taking a defiant note at a meeting with United Russia activists Saturday, Medvedev said he had told Obama Russia doesn't care about the U.S. assessment of the vote and that the U.S. criticism was unacceptable.

"When we hear lectures in the worst traditions of the Cold War, it causes indignation," Medvedev said.

Unimpressed by the government's vague promises of liberalization, the opposition aims to keep up the pressure with a series of protests, and is placing much hope on a Moscow rally Dec. 24 that organizers believe will attract at least 50,000 people.

Protesters on Saturday repeated demands of last weekend's protest, calling for a repeat election, the punishment of those responsible for vote fraud and the release of political prisoners. Speakers angrily dismissed Putin's comment this week in which he claimed protest leaders were acting at the West's behest and sarcastically said he thought the white ribbons many protesters wear as an emblem were condoms.

"He was calling us condoms financed by the State Department, crooks that are trying to steal the country, and I think that this is the reaction that shows he was scared," said Ilya Ponomarev of the Left Front opposition movement

"We are speaking here against vote fraud, which is a political HIV," Yabloko leader Sergei Mitrokhin said, citing an inscription Yabloko printed on white ribbons handed out to protesters.

Russian news media also reported about 500 people held a protest in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, several hundred gathered in Yekaterinburg in the Urals and about 100 tried for an unauthorized rally in Samara, where four demonstrators were arrested.

The wave of protest comes less than three months before Putin is to run for a new term as president, the post he held in 2000-2008, and indicates his return to the Kremlin may be less easy than initially assumed for the man who has dominated Russia over the past dozen years.

On Saturday, the Communist Party nominated its leader Gennady Zyuganov to run for president. Zyuganov forced Boris Yeltsin into a run-off in the 1996 presidential election and although the Communists' support has declined since then, he could attract a protest vote against Putin.
