The cost of raising a family has become startling. ?Here in Minnesota, we have the third highest daycare expenses after New York and Washington DC. ?In the Twin Cities metropolitan area, families can expect to pay somewhere around $300-$520 dollars per week for infant care at a daycare center. ?In-home daycare can vary in price and is often less expensive, however difficulties in gaining state licensing raise rates of in-home providers. ?The startling cost of daycare has forced many families to compromise on what they think is the best environment for their children. ?Many families are receiving some level of financial assistance with daycare expenses, yet struggling families are turned down because of the high demand for aid.
Amidst this crisis where families may easily expect to pay 40% or more of their income towards daycare and be ineligible for aid, it is not surprising to see how 1 in 3 families in the United States has had to cut back on basic household necessities (food, utilities, etc) to afford disposable diapers. ?Families have lots of expenses during the first year of a baby?s life, yet through a focus on natural parenting (breastfeeding, cloth diapering, shopping garage sales, etc) we can drastically reduce the estimated $10,000 spent during the first year of a baby?s life and improve the quality of life for our family. ?*Did you know that purchasing a breast pump is now covered under insurance thanks to the new healthcare law?1. Wooden Walking toy purchased from a garage sale for $1. Price new is $90
2. Cloth diapers can save a family around $2500 on their first child.? Additional children are diapered for almost free.
The key message is that there are expenses during parenthood that we can, and cannot control.??Daycare (or lost income from a stay-at-home parent) is an expense that is unavoidable for most families. ?Diapering, food, and other purchases are all areas where easy changes can add up to serious savings. ?The amazing news is that saving money is?fashionable. ?Breastfeeding and cloth diapering have gained exponential support after the damage big business has done. ?People are talking about saving money and they are proud of the positive changes they?ve made for their families.
How is your family saving money?
